Restoration Services

The Dropped Shop Restoration Studio provides expert restoration services to all types of damaged pottery, porcelain, glass and gold leaf articles. Working for museums, antique dealers, interior decorators, and private collectors, items typically restored range from the rarest of ancient Chinese pottery to modern collector items. Restoration services are tailored to meet the needs of the customer.

Typically most customers will prefer the modern "invisible restoration" where all evidence of the damage is removed and the piece appears as it did when originally manufactured.

In addition to invisible restoration, The Dropped Shop also provides traditional "museum" restoration in which the history of the piece is documented and respected. The missing elements are replaced but there is no effort to conceal the extent of the damage or the restoration. Cracks and replaced elements are clearly visible on close inspection.

Besides restoring antique and decorative items, The Dropped Shop Restoration Studio routinely returns glass and crystal stemware, vases, and bowls to serviceability. Chipped rims, bases, and flaws in crystal items are cut or reshaped and the original brilliant luster returned though polishing.

Modern and antique gold leaf frames can also be restored and returned to their original beauty. Damaged or missing elements are cast or hand carved, re-leafed with the same color and karat weight gold leaf and patinized to match the original finish.

Lectures, slide shows, and demonstrations for historical societies, collectors groups, and antique study groups can be arranged for an honorarium plus travel. The slide show covers types of restoration, examples or restorations, and detecting and care of restoration. Specialized slide lectures can be customized to meet the needs of the organization.

Cost of Services

Restoration prices will vary on the nature, location, and extent of the  damage to the piece. No work is performed without a customer-approved  estimate and no restoration final cost will exceed 10% of the approved estimate. Estimates can be given in person or with several quality photos emailed.
